Isn’t it nice to know that you can count on the local government to provide general dental health care to its residents? In Victoria, we have what we call Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV), a local agency that provides quality public oral and dental health care programs for Victoria residents. Their dental health services are available through the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne and other accredited dental clinics all over Victoria.
Dental health services: All you need to know
Healthcare providers responsible for public dental healthcare are managed by Australia’s Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) policies and guidelines. The DHHS controls the rules and regulations concerning a resident’s eligibility, access, appropriate dental charges, waiting list protocol, and others.
Different dental health services offered
General dental care
Essential dental services such as dental consultations, teeth cleaning, fillings, tooth extractions, or root canal treatment (RCT) are provided to adult residents of Victoria. You must be a health care cardholder or a pensioner to avail of the services. Although you may need to pay $28 per check-up with a maximum charge of $112 for a complete dental course, this is remarkably cheaper than the national average dental cost of $222. Some residents like the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities can even get free dental health services from the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne.
Children aged 0-17 years old can avail of free dental health services through the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). This privilege gives them assistance for dental services bulk-billed through Medicare over a period of two years. They only need to receive Australian government payments like the Family Tax Benefit A to be eligible.
Emergency dental health services
Children and young adult residents aged 0-17 years old may avail themselves of emergency dental services for free. This privilege is still under the CDBS. Victorians with healthcare card or pensioner cards can also avail of the affordable dental emergency procedures and consultation and just pay $28.
Victorians can make use of the affordable dentures from community dental clinics and the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne. They only need to pay $67.50 per denture or get a full denture for only $135.
Dental specialist services
Dental health services from specialists like endodontists, orthodontists, periodontists, or oral surgeons can also be available, but the cost would depend on the dental procedure you wish to undergo.
With the information we shared, caring for your dental health becomes more accessible and more convenient. Now that dental health services come in affordable and hassle-free terms, it is just right for all of us to strive and do our part in achieving and preserving our good dental and oral health.
